چکیده

Exposure of female virgin C3H /St mice to two ppm of selenite in the drink ing water for 15 months lowered the incidence of spontaneous mammary tumors to 10 percent relative to the observed incidence of 82 percent in untreated controls. Arsenic in the drinking water in form of arsenite, at levels of 10 ppm, reduced the tumor incidence to 27 percent but caused a significant enhancement of the growth rate of spontaneous or transplanted mammary tumors. The present results provide a pertinent example for the cancer pro tecting effect of the essential trace element selenium. A comparison of the female breast cancer death rate in the Continental United States indicates that the breast-CA mortality is lower in areas with abundant or high dietary selenium supply than in regions deficient in this element.

Effect of Pregnancy, Lactation, and Pituitary Isografts on the Genesis of Spontaneous Mammary Gland Tumors in the Mouse1

Forced breeding of female (C3H/HeJ X DBA/2J) mice increased the incidence and reduced the latent period of development of spontaneous mammary tumors. Conversely, virgin mice were minimally sensitive to tumor development after a lengthy latent period. Ectopie pituitary isografts were potent stimuli to tumor development, increasing the incidence in virgin mice to forced breeding levels. Tumor inc...

Antigenic properties of methylcholanthrene-induced tumors in mice of the strain of origin.

Immunity has been produced against transplantable tumors which arose in inbred mice by Gross (3) and in inbred rats by Lewis et al. (6, 7). These results have been explained on the basis ei ther that the tumor has mutated during repeated transplantation, or that immunogenetic differ ences among the inbred mice have developed (4, 8). In the experiments of Lewis et al., immunity to uniformly prog...

Detection of Mouse Cytomegalovirus in Adenocarcinoma Bearing Razi/A Mice: Molecular and Pathological Studies

Despite a lot of research, the etiology and progression of breast cancer remain incompletely understood. Recently, human cytomegalovirus (HCMV) was reported as a risk factor for breast cancer. The aim of this study was to know whether breast cancer could be caused by cytomegalovirus or not? In this experiment seventeen samples of RAZI/A mice with spontaneous breast cancer were being gathered fr...

Spontaneous metastasis from primary C3H mouse mammary tumors.

The normal incidence of metastasis was determined in 207 C3H/He and 42 C3Hf/He mice with spontaneous mammary tumors. The effects of early versus delayed surgical removal of the tumors on the incidence of metastasis were studied in the C3H/He mice. The presence of metastases was determined by histological examination, primarily of the lungs. The incidence of metastasis was proportional to the si...
